An individual is eligible to take the GED® Tests if they meet ALL of the following conditions:

  • 17 years of age or older*
  • The individual does not have a high school diploma or high school equivalency certificate
  • The individual is a resident of the State of Illinois

*If an individual is 17 years of age and has been enrolled in a public, private, or home school setting in the last 12 months, they must present a withdrawal letter from the last school attended before taking the GED test.  Proof of withdrawal can be emailed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or faxed to 217-558-6700.

On-line pre-registration is required and is managed by Pearson VUE for GED® Testing Services. Testers will need to create a personal account, register, and choose a test date, time and Pearson VUE location at www.ged.com.

Anyone from Illinois can test at any Illinois location.

A credit or debit card and an email address are needed to register and schedule tests. There is a $30 fee PER test module.

The series of four GED®tests modules include:

  • Math
  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • Reasoning Through Language Arts

You do not have to schedule all four tests on one day.

Results will be sent to the email address you provided, usually within the same day.

Study guides and practice tests are available at www.ged.com and www.test-guide.com.

Illinois does not require you to prepare for the GED® test in an adult education classroom, but free GED®classes may be offered at a community college near you.

Retesting

If the standard score is not achieved on any portion of the GED®Test, testers will need to retest for that module ONLY. The fee to retest is $30 for each subject/module.

In Illinois, there is no waiting period to retest if you do not pass a subject area test the first time.

After taking a test subject three times, you'll have to wait 60 days before retesting. There is no limit on the number of times you can test in a year.

Testing Procedures

Please arrive at least fifteen minutes early for your scheduled test.

You will need to bring a VALID Illinois driver’s license OR VALID Illinois state ID. If your ID is not valid or you do not have one, you will not be allowed to test.

Examinees are not permitted to bring purses, tote bags, electronic devices, food, textbooks, backpacks, notebooks, jackets, hats, cell phones, or other nonessential items into the testing room.

Items will be collected and stored in a cabinet. You will be required to turn off your cell phone before storing it.

Testers are also reminded of acceptable behavior in the testing room. Anyone who disturbs other testers by talking out loud, making noise or doing anything to disrupt other testers, will be asked to leave and your test will be abandoned.

As of July 1, 2022, the Constitution requirement for awarding the Illinois High School Equivaliency Certificate returns. In order to complete the requirement, a test-taker will only need to complete the State of Illinois Constitution Module. The new online Illinois Constitution Module has been developed to replace the former Constitution Test. The Constitution Module is available at http://ilconstitution.org/. It is estimated it will take two hours for a student to complete. It is available for High School Equivalency (HSE) candidates to take independently and does not require a proctoring at a test center. Testing Centers no longer need to offer the Constitution Test. After completion of the Constitution Module, completers will be asked to provide information about themselves that will be used to match the completion with HSE/GED records in the Illinois HSE/GED Portal. Completers will also be able to print or download a certificate showing completion. It is recommended that completers not take the Constitution test until they have completed at least one GED test so they have a record in the portal. If you have question regarding the Constitution test, please send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
