The Illinois Secretary of State now accepts online School Bus Permit renewal for permit holders renewed by a School Bus Employer. To use the new web system, the School Bus Employer must be registered with the Secretary of State and must submit the company email address of an employee who is authorized to renew School Bus Permits on behalf of the School Bus Employer. Please visit https://www.ilsos.gov/publications/pdf_publications/dsd_a351.pdf to download the form. The form can be returned via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., fax 217-524-3654 or USPS mail at Secretary of State, Driver Service Department, Safe Ride Section 2701 S. Dirksen Pkwy., Springfield, IL 62723. This form must be completed to enroll in the online renewal system. Once the form is returned to the Illinois Secretary of State, the email address will be entered into the system and a letter with instructions will be mailed to the address of the School Bus Employer in care of the authorized employee. 

The NEW First Division School Bus Driver Curriculum is for drivers of first division vehicles, multi-purpose passenger vehicles (MPPV or MPV) and passenger cars for ten passengers or fewer, including the driver.  See Vehicles Used by School District to Transport Students. This does not include the multi-function school activity bus (MFSAB/white activity bus). The use and qualifications of the approved vehicles have not changed; only the curriculum/training and school bus permit classifications have changed. 

 

Bus Driver Training

The Regional Office of Education #13 is responsible for conducting and keeping records of the initial training that is required for all new school bus and division one vehicle drivers prior to getting a permitand the annual refresher workshops that are required in the twelve month period prior to renewing their school bus or division one permit. Experienced drivers must take a two hour refresher course annually, and all new drivers must take an eight hour course in school bus driver safety and first aid, as prescribed by the Illinois State Board of Education and administered by the ROE.
