The Alternative Learning Center
Alternative education is any schooling that offers a different model of instruction than the traditional classroom. The Alternative Learning Center is student-centered and flexible in nature to provide for the individual needs of our smaller student body. In this way, opportunities for applied learning, self-directed study and/or tutorial assistance are increased. By offering a modified, effective educational setting using alternative instructional methods, we believe that all students will become competent, productive citizens who will meet the demands and opportunities of life in the twenty-first century. Funding for the school is provided through the Truant Alternative and Optional Education grant and the Regional Safe School Program grant.
Eligible Students
At-risk students served at the Alternative Learning Center are referred through the local school districts. This process involves the superintendent, principal or other staff member as designated by the local district. A complete referral form is necessary before a student can enroll in the program.
Once a student is referred to the Alternative Learning Center, a staffing is set up by the director to determine proper placement of the student. The staffing will include the student, parents, principal or superintendent of the sending district and the ALC director. The final decision to accept a student into the Alterntive Learning Center remains with the program director.
Alternative Learning Center Classes
The Alternative Learning Center offers teacher-lead coursework that enables students to achieve grade promotions or a high school diploma. Classes are offered to students in grades six through twelve. Emphasis is placed on providing core curriculum as well as developing life and career/job skills. All educators at the Alternative Learning Center hold valid Illinois teaching licenses and participate in regular professional development.
